Collect sales tax and VAT

Have Stripe calculate and collect sales tax, VAT or GST on your sales, only where you're registered.

You're the seller on every sale, so sales tax, VAT or GST on your sales is yours to handle. AloPortal gives you a simple way to have Stripe work it out and collect it at checkout.

✨ Quick answer: on the Creator side, open Settings β†’ Sales tax, save your head office and product tax code, add the places you're registered, then turn on Collect sales tax on new membership sign-ups.

πŸ› οΈ Set it up

1

Open the Sales tax tab

On the Creator side (the Creator / Member switch is at the bottom of the left sidebar), click Settings in the sidebar, then the Sales tax tab. On a phone, tap the menu at the top-left first. You need your payout account set up first.

2

Enter your head office

Enter your head office address and pick a product tax code that describes what you sell.

3

Add your registrations

Add each place where you're registered to collect tax, with your registration details.

4

Turn on the switch

Once Stripe has your settings, the switch Collect sales tax on new membership sign-ups appears. Turn it on.

⚠️ Heads up: the switch applies to new purchases. Members who joined before you turned it on keep renewing without tax, and members who joined while it was on keep paying tax if you turn it off later.

βš™οΈ How it works at checkout

  • Fans are asked for their billing address, so Stripe can work out the right tax for where they live.

  • Stripe adds tax only where you have an active registration. Everywhere else, the tax is zero.

  • Tax shows as its own line in the order summary before the fan pays.

  • It applies to your membership plans, both recurring and one-time (lifetime). Tips and items sold on their own, like a single unlock, post or course, don't have tax added at checkout.

πŸ’³ Tax and your earnings

The tax a fan pays isn't your income: you send it to the tax authority. AloPortal's platform fee never applies to the tax part of a sale, only to your price.

πŸ”’ What you're responsible for

  • Knowing where you need to register, and registering with those tax authorities.

  • Filing returns and paying over the tax you collect.

  • Keeping your registrations up to date in Settings β†’ Sales tax.

βœ… Good to know: this isn't tax advice. Rules differ by country and state, so a local tax professional is the best person to ask where you need to register.

❓ Questions

No. It's optional. Whether you owe sales tax depends on where you and your fans are, and how much you sell. If you're not sure, ask a tax professional.

It appears once your head office and product tax code are saved. If it still doesn't show, refresh the page.

Yes. Switch it off and new purchases stop collecting tax straight away. Memberships that started while it was on keep their tax on renewals.
